An analysis of shopping trips to supermarkets and farmers' markets shows that, in relation to the transport volume, a car would only be required for around 6% of all purchases. Considering that some shopping trips are combined with the way home from work it still leaves 77% of the shopping trips that could be done by bike instead of the car. However there is also great potential in the commercial sector. According to the Baseline Study by Cyclelogistics, 51% of all vehicle trips that have to do with urban transport could be made by bike, cargo bike or bike trailer. (Article in German)


A journalist of one of Austria's largest daily newspapers uses a cargo bike for the first time. Hesitent at first his experience is very positive and in the end he's sad to have to switch back to his own bike. The CityChangerCargoBike projects is of course also mentioned. (Article in German)

Cargo Bike Hubs

TransportXtra, a resource that provides news, comments and analysis on transport, has written an article about Cargo Bikes in the UK. The Department of Transport (DfT) is providing £2 million to support the use of cargo bikes for last mile deliveries and general community services.  The article also mentions the European Cycle Logistics Federation (ECLF) and the City Changer Cargo Bike project.

Testing Bullitt

The chair of the European Cargo Bikes and Cycle Logistics Experts Group Richard Armitage wrote an article about cargo bikes for the magazine Cycling Industry News.
More and more cargo bikes are being sold and produced, but attempts are being made to increase their use even further through various measures, including subsidy programmes. They also offer numerous advantages for commercial use.

It all began very modestly with four bikes. That was in 2011, when the Environment Department of the City of Graz was one of the first municipalities in the German-speaking world to introduce a subsidy for load bikes. In 2019 there were already 98 cargo bikes for which subsidies of up to 1000 euros were paid out. "And the support will continue", says city councillor for the environment Judith Schwentner, who is providing funds from the "Feinstabfonds" for this purpose. The Traffic councillor will present a package of measures by April, "to shift more transport traffic from cars to cargo bikes"
