Linz-Rad - free rental of freight bicycles Environmentally friendly mobility measure starts on 13 May
Sustainable mobility is crucial for air quality and environmental quality in our city. For this reason, the environmental management of the city's Planning, Technology and Environment division and the Linz City Library are launching an innovative joint project with the free rental of cargo bicycles.
The free rental system makes it possible to simply try out a cargo bike and be convinced of its advantages. For all those who are so enthusiastic that they would like to have one themselves the city offers an extensive sponsorship. Eva Schobesberger the city’s environmental adviser and city councillor is convinced that this project has model effect.
The rental is kept extremely simple with an open source system that is also used by other Austrian cities. Through this on-line reservation it is possible that all citizens from Linz can rent a cargo bike fast and uncomplicated way.
Freight bicycles are an environmentally friendly alternative to taking children with you or transporting loads of up to 100 kilograms, such as beverage crates, moving boxes, TV sets, a washing machine and much more. With a transport bicycle you often reach your destination faster in the Linz city area and it offers an unbeatable alternative to a car or truck. Especially on short inner-city routes, the use of cycle paths can avoid traffic jams and save time. In addition, a lengthy search for a parking space is no longer necessary. Parking fees are also saved in the inner-city area.
So that everyone can use these environmentally friendly forms of mobility and get to know them, the free rental service in Linz was started by the municipal environmental department. For the time being, two different models are available free of charge at two different rental stations. Depending on capacity utilisation and demand, these can also change. The current stations are the Stadtbibliothek in the Wissensturm and the Stadtbibliothek Urfahr in the Neues Rathaus.
The bikes were purchased from the budget of the Environment Department. Almost 4,600 euros were spent on them. The bicycles can be hired from the city libraries.
There are two models to choose from a E-Babboe (E-Bike) with a large transport box with secure high wooden panels has a ramp for easy entry and exit of children or dogs or loading and unloading of goods. The current lending or return station: Stadtbibliothek Wissensturm (City Library Wissensturm)
The second bike is a "Bicicapace Classic" and comes from Italy. It is equipped with a water-repellent front pocket with a capacity of 60 litres. The Bicicapace can also be used for larger purchases, but the bike still remains manoeuvrable like a regular bike. The current lending or return station: Urfahr City Library in the New Town Hall.
If you want to borrow a Linz bike, you must be of age and become a customer of the city library. If a customer card is not yet available, it can be obtained free of charge from any library branch upon presentation of an official photo ID.
The existing online platform www.das-lastenrad.at is used for easy reservation processing. Here you can also see the days that have already been fully booked.
